Preventing Truck Theft

Many tractors and trailers are stolen in the U.S., and even worse, very few of them are recovered by their owners. In this country, more than 1 million vehicles are reported stolen every year and 4 of the 10 favorite vehicles for theft are trucks. Be cautious with your vehicle because losing it also means losing your job.

Plan your route before you start your journey and try not to create a pattern for thieves to discover: avoid stopping for cigarettes, newspapers or food at the same places and at the same times of the day; be unpredictable when choosing your routes. Study your routes very well and make sure you know them well in order to avoid asking directions and being misled. Avoid giving lifts to strangers, make sure you understand the security manual and equipment of the vehicle and ensure that it is working properly at all times. Never leave your keys inside or near the truck while you are away. Hide your personal belongings from easy view and check with your company to make sure you have insurance coverage for lost property.

When you leave your truck always take the keys with you, make sure that all the compartments are locked. Always lock the truck when loading and unloading cargo and when driving, have the load compartment locked. If you are not working and you carry the keys with you, avoid using labels or anything that can tell a thief where they fit in.

Finally, decide where you will park to rest beforehand whenever possible. When you stop to eat, always park your truck within line of sight and with the loading doors near a wall, building, or other vehicle. Be alert when you are forced to stop due to an accident or an emergency, and respond only to uniformed police.
